Well!! Nowadays, candidates are moving toward a flexible learning system when it comes to studying. The National Institute of Open Schooling (NIOS) had has been contributing a major role in providing open and distance quality education for the students up to pre-degree level. National Institute of Open Schooling is also known as National Open School (NOS) which comes under the Ministry of Human Resource Development of Government of India.
The courses offered by National Open School Board (NOS Board) have the equivalent recognition as offered by any other education board like CBSE, CISCE, State Level Educational Boards etc. NIOS is one of the largest open schools in the world and was established in 1989, so far 3.58 million students had has been passed out from NIOS Board.
NIOS is a national level education board and has a big contribution to increasing literacy rates in India by providing distance education to the remote area candidates. NIOS is such a good platform for the candidates who are looking for quality distance education for Academic and Technical courses. Every Year, more than five lakhs of candidates throughout India enroll to take admission in various courses offered by NIOS which makes it the largest Open Schooling System in the world.
Courses Offered by NIOS
National Institute of Open Schooling
Candidates have the opportunity to take admission in Government authorized NIOS Education Board from basic education i.e. class III to Senior Secondary level courses. Once you certified with any courses offered by National Open School (NOS), you will be able to take admission in any universities, colleges for graduation and post graduation degree. You may even appear for any competitive entrance examination after completion of the Senior Secondary Course from NIOS Board.
1. Open Basic Education Programme
When you opt for NIOS – Open Basic Education program, then you should be aware of its courses i.e. NOS offers three (3) levels courses-
- OBE ‘A’ Level Course:- which is equivalent to class III
- OBE ‘B’ Level Course:- which is equivalent to class V
- OBE ‘C’ Level Course:- which is equivalent to class VIII

2. Secondary Course
Candidates who are opting for Secondary course which is equivalent to class X (10th) standard will be happy to know that they may choose minimum 5 subjects with one or two languages and maximum 7 subjects.

3. Senior Secondary Course
Those who are passed out in the secondary course and want to continue their study further may take admission in NIOS- Senior Secondary Course which is equivalent to 12th standard. Like in the secondary course here in senior secondary course also students have the option to choose at least 5 subjects and at most 7 subjects with 1 or 2 compulsory languages.

4. Vocational Education Courses
NIOS offers various School-based vocational education courses in India whose period varies from months to years depending on which vocational program you are looking for. National Open School offers more than 83 Diploma and certificate courses for the candidates who have a minimum of 21 Years of age. Through Vocational Education and Training (VET) program, skilled and middle-level manpower student contributes to increasing the economic sector of India. NIOS offers three levels of vocational certificates-
i) Certificate in Open Schooling (COS)
ii) Advance Certificate in Open Schooling (ACOS)
iii) Diploma in Open Schooling (DOS)

Life Enrichment Programmes
Apart from the academic courses, the National Institute of Open Schooling (NIOS) give the opportunity to its students to take part in various Life Enrichment Programmes (LEPs). There is no examination will be conducted for Life Enrichment Programmes and these programs help the student to enhance their knowledge in every aspect. The various NIOS- LIPs courses are performing Arts (Music, Dance, Painting), Jan Swasthya (Public Health), Paripurna Mahila (Women Empowerment), Yog and Jeevan Vigyan etc.

NIOS Online Admission

The study material will be delivered to the mailing address that you have mentioned while registration at free of cost. There is no agency or institute recognized by NIOS for doing Online Admission for any course.

National Institute of Open Schooling conducts the Public Examination twice in a year i.e. b/w March – April and October–November. The NIOS Exam result will be declared within 6 weeks from the date of examination
On Demand Examination by NIOS
NOS provide flexibility to its students about the examination and has introduced On Demand Examination system for Secondary and Senior Secondary Level. According to that, whenever NIOS students may feel that they are ready for the examination may appear for the subject exam that he/she has opted for.
Note:- On Demand Examination by NIOS is conducted every month throughout the year.
